Mattos Engelberg hires two partners in Brazil

24 . janeiro . 2020

Brazilian Latin Lawyer 250 firm Mattos Engelberg Advogados has hired two lawyers as partners, strengthening its disputes practice.

João Carlos Areosa and Felipe Moraes joined the firm on 8 January and take the firm’s partner count to 26.

Areosa joins from Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown and focuses on domestic and international arbitrations and complex litigation. He has experience working for several big Brazilian firms, including BMA – Barbosa, Müssnich, Aragão and Machado Meyer Advogados.

Fellow new partner Moraes previously worked at São Paulo’s chamber of mediation and business arbitration. He has experience in matters related to construction, infrastructure, energy, public private partnerships and concession contracts, but also corporate disputes.

Arbitration is still a new practice to Mattos Engelberg. The firm launched the practice last year by incorporating Favacho Advogados, an arbitration boutique focusing on agribusiness. Mattos Engelberg’s managing partner Fernando Engelberg says Areosa and Moraes are important additions to the firm, especially as it plans to expand the practice beyond the agribusiness sector.

A spokesperson from Tauil & Chequer says Areosa left the firm on good terms.

Mattos Engelberg opened in 2016 and has grown considerably in the past year. In July, it signed an international cooperation agreement with UK firm Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP. The agreement is not exclusive but encourages referral work in the jurisdictions where the firms have offices. It gives Mattos Engelberg access to offices in several European countries, including France, Spain and the UK.

The firm has doubled in size since launching and several new partners joined in 2019. Two associates came on board as partners from Madrona Advogados and Veirano Advogados in March. The merger with Favacho brought one new partner, while the firm made a lateral hire from Motta Fernandes Advogados to bolster its competition practice.

Shortly before the end of 2019, one trade partner departed to set up a new boutique.
