Mattos Engelberg hires agribusiness partner

25 . April . 2019

Brazil’s Mattos Engelberg Advogados has demonstrated its hunger for growth again by absorbing a São Paulo agribusiness boutique just weeks after it hired two other partners.

Favacho Advogados ceased to exist when Frederico Favacho joined Mattos Engelberg as partner on 8 April. He brings one associate with him.
Favacho worked at his own law firm for 25 years. He is an arbitrator and handles cases involving agricultural commodities in Brazil and abroad. “Our firm already has a strong agribusiness practice in its DNA, with three partners coming from companies in the sector,” says founding partner Fernando Engelberg, who adds that Favacho’s hire completes that offer.

In addition to agribusiness, Favacho also practises maritime law. This means Mattos Engelberg can offer associated legal services for the first time.

Earlier this month, Mattos Engelberg hired two partners to boost its tax and compliance divisions. The outfit has doubled in size since it was founded in 2016 when Mattos Muriel Kestener separated into three different firms. It now has 100 lawyers, including 26 partners. This is up from 10 partners and 50 associates two years ago.

Engelberg says his firm is getting near the 120-lawyer mark, which he considers the ideal number to operate as a one-stop-shop. Until then, more hires can be expected. “Our strategy is to be full-service,” Engelberg explains. The M&A and intellectual property practices are two areas that may be reinforced soon.

Despite its rapid expansion, Engelberg says the firm has largely maintained its cohesion. “All partners that joined the firm had a long relationship with each other, having worked together at their previous firms or as clients,” he says. It’s not always been plain sailing though; in 2018, two labour partners left to form a boutique.
